How to Stay Safe During Your Erasmus

Studying abroad is an adventure of a lifetime, but safety should always be a priority.

We’ve put together some easy-to-follow tips to help you stay safe and sound during your Erasmus journey. The key? Be cautious, stay aware, and always be as prepared as possible.

Safety Tips for Erasmus Students

  • Have a list of emergency contacts, including your bank and your travel insurance provider.
  • Keep a photocopy of your ID or passport in a safe place, just in case you lose the original and need proof of identification. Plus, carrying a copy is much more convenient.
  • Find your university’s International Office during your first week. It’s your go-to for any issues. Your local Erasmus Student Network (ESN) section can also be a great source of help and guidance.
  • Ask locals for advice on areas to avoid.
  • Always let someone know where you’re or where you’re going.
  • Keep valuables out of sight, especially in crowded places like clubs, and store cash and credit cards in secure, zipped pockets.
  • Stick together with your friends on nights out, make sure everyone gets home safely, and avoid walking home alone when possible.
  • Be aware that in many countries, bus and tram tickets must be validated. If you forget to do so, you could end up with a fine.
  • Check in with your family regularly. Let them know where you are, where you’re headed next, and any changes to your plans. This helps keep you safe and gives your loved ones peace of mind.

What to Do If Something Goes Wrong

Report theft or serious incidents to the local police as soon as possible. Follow their instructions and contact your host university if you need extra support. They can help you with any necessary procedures.

Even if you follow all these tips, unexpected things can still happen. That’s why having international student travel insurance is a must. Medical emergencies, lost luggage, or a last-minute trip cancellation can disrupt your plans, but with student travel insurance, you’re covered.
