Essential Packing Tips for Erasmus Students: What You Can’t Forget

Packing for an Erasmus adventure can be both exciting and overwhelming. With limited space in your luggage, every item needs to count.

We’ve put together some tips to help you pack smartly and make the most out of your study abroad experience no matter your destination.

Start by making a packing list, that way you’ll make sure not to leave anything out.

Avoid overpacking, this is probably the best tip we can give you. We all do it but just don’t! Not only because you’ll be carrying stuff you won’t use but also because you’ll want to bring back souvenirs. Plus, light packing makes trips way easier.

Don’t forget comfort items like photos or your favorite snack that can later help you deal with homesickness.

The must-have Erasmus packing essentials

  • Travel Insurance: Save your policy on your phone for easy access, and maybe even keep a physical copy. Think of travel insurance as your safety net for unexpected situations. With OnCampus Abroad student travel insurance for instance, you get unlimited medical expenses, coverage for lost luggage, repatriation, legal help, and more… You can even get covered if you decide to do some extreme sports like skiing or hiking.
  • Important Documents: Pack your ID or passport, European Health Insurance Card (if you have one), and Erasmus papers. It’s a good idea to make copies and store them separately.
  • Electronics: Laptop, headphones, phone and charger: Also, you might want to bring a power bank to keep your devices charged while exploring.
  • Weather-Appropriate Clothing: Check the average weather of your Erasmus destination and pack accordingly. Layering pieces, a travel capsule wardrobe, and comfortable shoes should top your packing list.
  • Meds: pack a travel-sized first aid kit with stuff you already have at home like ibuprofen and paracetamol.
  • Here’s a lifesaver: a mini sewing kit (even if you don’t know how to sew). You never know when it’ll come in handy. A small padlock can be handy too.

Bonus Tips

Pack a foldable tote bag for day trips or extra storage!

Bring some cash and at least two cards, in case one fails. Travel-friendly cards like Revolut or N26 can be helpful, especially if you’ll be using a different currency.

Don’t forget to label your luggage and keep valuables in the carry-on baggage.

The Final Check

Before zipping up your suitcase, remember to double-check your packing list. With these packing tips, you’ll be set to enjoy your Erasmus journey to the fullest. Bon voyage!
